Summer Internship

Executives

Well, my internship search is finally over! I’ll be going to Hudson, MA! Anyways for anyone who might be interested here are some fun facts. I applied to 39 companies. I emailed 32 alumni of various years. Some responded, some didn’t. There were 25 other companies that I looked at enough to note them down. Most of them were not accepting interns any more, or maybe just didn’t seem that great in the end.

Now, I had a lot of trouble because I’m only a sophmore. Most of my real ECE classes are next year. I actually spoke on the phone with one alumni who was talking about one class that really made him pick his specialty and what he wanted to work with at a job. I looked it up, and I’m taking the class next year. Also, I don’t have any internship experience yet, and experience is very important.

In the end, I got two offers. Both weren’t specifcally with computer engineering as I had first desired, but they were pretty good offers. It was a hard decision to make!

Then, I immediately had to take a drug test (within 72 hours) and had to start looking for housing. Unfortunately, the service they provided was largely useless… but craigslist is awesome! I found something within walking distance and already sent my deposit. I’ll be living with a guy, his gf, and two other interns. Time to focus on studying for finals! Last day of classes is next Wednesday, my last final is the 10th, physics TI training is the 16th, and then go home the 16th! Internship starts the 22nd.

Housing

Monopoly Hotel

We officially have picked housing for next year. I’ll be living in another 6 person suite.. yay! We still have Christine/Mike and Myself, but we sadly lost Annette to UMich, and then Brian to Europe, and Daniel to Drama House. Chelsea will be replacing Annette, Yang will be replacing Brian, and I guess that leaves Nicky replacing Daniel? It doesn’t quite fit I know but it will have to do. Anyways Nicky and Chelsea will at least start out living in the double, and then I get the supersingle (we drew straws for it).

Old Suite vs New Suite

We will be moving from Wilder 3 to Anderson 8. As you can see on the map above this means we are pretty much living in the same exact location, just on a different floor. We visited the suite and it gets a better view, and seems better in most ways. We ended up doing pretty well in the housing lottery- no groups of all freshmen got a suite this year (we were able to get one last year). Last year we got 112 (and were midway through the sixpoint people), this year we got 87 (and were fifth of the 12 point people).Yay for next year!

Schtuff

Pirate Duck

Okay so I have thought of a few new things to add to the website. So far I haven’t done any of them. Instead, I finally got around to fixing my “All Bookmarks” link on the right. Now it actually looks nice AND works. I also copied over my DC++ guide. I made it almost a year ago, but people still sometimes ask me how to connect and its easiest to just have it in one central place. I’ll try to add some more stuff soon!

In the meantime I have been: figuring out housing for next year, declaring my major (ECE), declaring my minors (math, physics?), determining scheduling for next fall (more to come later), becoming a physics TA, applying to be a computer science TA, becoming chairperson of Cinema Group (club at college) and looking for a summer internship. I also have tons of work woohoo!
