Final Week

I figured it would be best to split my posts in some sort of way, so this covers till Friday. The second half of the week at work was pretty chaotic. The power went out for a little and the backup generators didn’t turn on. Since the factory runs 24×7 this is very bad. Also, a number of systems broke with the power going out. So.. everyone was busy getting the factory back up and all of our systems back. Let me rephrase that, everyone EXCEPT for me was frantically running around. This made life difficult for me, because noone was around / able to answer any questions I had about my projects.

All of my projects are wrapping up. It is almost perfect timing- I finished another app on Thursday, and put finishing touches on a few of my other projects. I’m at the point where I basically have to just show other people in my department how to use / fix my programs and show them how the programs work. I’ll need to write a lot of documentation next week but it won’t be bad. Too bad so many people are leaving! There was a going away lunch on Thursday.. 5 people were leaving Friday!

Friday was my floating holiday. All interns earn vacation time, and also have a floating holiday. You can cash out the vacation time, but you either use or lose your floating holiday. So, I decided to take it on friday!

I was able to sleep in (joy!) and then met up with friends from UR (Liz and Ben) in Boston. The plan was to meet Liz at her house, then take the T into Boston and meet Ben in the commons. Of course, this plan went horribly wrong.

I got to Liz’s house at 1:15 (I was not expecting traffic to be bad) and we were supposed to meet Ben at 1:30. Liz had said that it takes 30 minutes to get into Boston so thats what I planned on.. however that was not taking the T. (I wanted to avoid driving into Boston on a weekday) Not only did the T take much longer, but we got kindof lost along the way.. apparently Liz does not know the area that well- she doesn’t drive :(. So, we finally got into Boston at about 3PM oops! Using the cellular telephone, we decided to just meet Ben at the science center but we ran into him when we were transfering trains.

Finally we got to the Science Center and went to Bodyworlds2. I couldn’t take pictures in the exhibit but it was amazing.  The guy, GUNTHER is obviously pretty messed up in the head, and I would not want to be left alone with him, but his exhibits are pretty interesting.  There are a few various types of exhibits:

  • The full bodys.  They are moved into clever poses and are described to the viewers.  They can get pretty freaky but are also pretty interesting.  They are what you see on most advertisements for the exhibit.
  • Systems of the body.  These are all extracted for your viewing pleasure in glass cabinents that you can walk around.  They get interesting when normal parts are shown next to parts with various diseases.  (normal lung vs smoker lung vs coal lung was the most interesting in my IMHO)
  • Cross sections.  These are as if someone took a 5mm shaving of your body and preserved it.  There are cross sections of various areas and then whole body cross sections.  One was even split apart like a deck of cards.

Anyways you should see this exhibit if you can.  Once in a lifetime experience.  However I do not plan on donating my body to a madman like him any time soon.  Also I refuse to touch some of the bodys like I saw various doctors doing (they just point and touch when describing various things eew).

After seeing the freakfest, we went around the rest of the science center.  The Cleveland science center is pretty good but I have to say this one is better.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to see exhibits because we had to go eat.

Liz left us to eat with her parents so Ben and I went to harvard square.  We ate at Bartley’s which I would informed “serve me the the best burger I had all summer.”  They only take cash (they say “real food, real money”), and don’t have a bathroom, and are always crowded but it is worth it.  The burgers were great.  They are all named after famous people, and all supposedly taste delish.  I had a burger (forget which kind sorry) and some sort of rasberry lime thingy.  The place is always crowded and seats you at random talbes with other people (my table).  Also the walls are lined with tons of random stuff.

After food, left Ben and re-met up with Liz and her parents for Shakespeare On the Commons  .  We watched the first half of Boston’s version of The Taming of the Shrew (it was set in North End- Boston’s little italy).   By intermission we were bored and cold (it was freezing for the past few days).  The play was intersting at first though.. its pretty cool to have a ton of people gather for a free play!

Liz’s family gave me a ride back to my car and I headed over to Dan’s house.  We played some cards and Guitar Hero. (Zi’s last day was Friday)

Saturday was cape cod.. tons of AMAZING pictures.  But before that, look at all fo the pictures from TODAY!

Chatham, Cape Cod

Went to visit my Uncle Chuck in Chatham, Cape Cod. Google Maps said that it was a 2 hour 22 minute drive. Since it was a longer drive, I needed some music but I left my iPod at work.. so I picked it up before leaving. The good part is that I had my camera with me so I took some pictures! See them here, but the highlights are: the HD1 entrance sign (I usually used the other one), the actual HD1 entrance, a picture of the outside of the fab, peeking over the sea of cubes, and finally where I work.

So i had my music, but the traffic was bad, and the drive took closer to three hours. I was able to survive because of a few stops where I could just stretch. I finally made it over a big bridge into Cape Cod. My uncle’s backyard was a huge swampish overgrown area which looked really cool.

We both were hungry so we went into town, and grabbed some food at a local flavor of a chipotle. It was essentially the same food but went by a different name.

After eating we continued walking to one side of the cape and saw the town pier and a great view of the high tide. We then walked to the other side of the cape which had a lighthouse and humongus beach. I took a ton of pictures, but you can see those in the gallery. However if you are really lazy here is a picture of the surf (the water was pretty cold), the town as seen from the beach, a kite (I like the colors in this picture), some HUGE dunes, and my favorite picture of the beach with some binoculars. It was really interesting because there were a ton of seals in the water. Apparently they used to be very rare and their population just exploded in the past few years.

We then headed over to the fishing dock- this is the place where the fishermen all drop off their fish. Pretty disgusting place, but there were a ton of tourists there. Some people were freaking out that their fish looked this way. Well, I didn’t take pictures of the fresh catches, but I took a picture of seagulls on the lifting crane, and the boat my uncle works on (its the middle red one in the back).

After stopping for a break, we drove to another beach and then went and got some dinner from a fried clam shack. It was horribly unhealthy (obviously) but was delicious. I think the fries were the most healthy part but thats okay. I had clam strips and my uncle got a variety pack and just gave me samples of everything. This made two meals for me yay! (Less cooking needed on my part)

We drove around a few back dirt roads and saw some scenery but then it was getting late so I left. Made much better time getting home!

Since Thursday

So I guess I haven’t updated since Thursday (beach day). Friday I went over to Dan’s House for a LAN. I’m working at Intel, what do you honestly expect from the interns? Thankfully we didn’t play any CS but we played a lot of other random games. Starcraft (I forgot how horrible I was at this game), Warcraft III, GTA2 (I forgot how horrible the multiplayer support was in this game- everyone always drops). We also played some Guitar Hero on PS2. Guitar is basically American DDR- the songs are better (they are actual songs) and instead of jumping around you are “playing” a guitar.

Over the actual weekend I was pretty lazy. I spent a lot of time making a results page for the URCG survey. If you are curious you can see it here: http://sa.rochester.edu/urcg/survey/results.php . Whenever you goto the page it updates, and it shows you everything you might want to know! Comments if people left them (only first names for semi-annonymous results), Average Ratings for movies and Ignore Counts for each movie. Keeping track of ignores greatly increases the usefulness of the results- before the average ratings were just calculated. So if only 10 people rated a movie but rated it 5, that movie would seem to do well, and we would not notice that 180 people didn’t bother to rate it. So now you get it all! Best part of the system is that it can be used in future semesters. Maybe I’ll even make it look nice one day.

I forgot to mention this but I went out and got a Nintendo DS Lite! Its just sexy. Look at the pictures

Nintendo DS Lite
DS Lite ClosedDS Lite Open

Obviously this is an amazing device. I think it is smaller than my Gameboy Advance. Not only is it smaller but it is MUCH more powerful- I think it is equivalent to the power of a Nintendo 64. It has 2 screens (one is a touch screen), two speakers (all earlier gameboys only had one speaker), and a new game cartridge (which is MUCH smaller than the GB / GBA cartridges). Also, battery life is 8-15 hours on low brightness (which is what I have it set at- the screen can get REALLY bright). And it has WiFi- so some games can connect to the internet to find other players!

I got the new super mario bros game, which is a lot of fun. It is classic mario with some 3D stuff thrown in to make it all look good. I’ll soon be getting Mario Kart, and then maybe the Metroid Prime game. I’m also looking foward to the new final fantasy game to come out. I’ll also be getting the Opera browser when it is released- internet on a gameboy wow.

Monday frisbee was canceled- too little interest and it was kindof muggy/hot outside. The interns are all leaving around now so the ultimate numbers are dwindling. We played Tuesday though. Not many people showed up so it was a LOT of running. I couldn’t slack off when there were only 2 or 3 other people on my team!

Movies Amelie
This movie was great.  Probably one of my favorite movies (so far).  I wouldn’t have expected a french love story to be so interesting, but I watched after hearing such good things about it.  The movie is just so quirky and strange that it is a lot of fun.  Amelie is a great character because she always has the funniest expressions.  If you haven’t seen this movie yet, go out and see it immediately.  You won’t be disappointed.
